MFNS partnered with a marine oil spill response organization (MSRO) in a northern Europe port. Having to handle a variety of types of oil spills on the port, the response team employs a variety of techniques to best clean harbor waters and remove spilled oil. A standard piece of equipment they employ is a single use sorbent boom. Once used, saturated or not, it is disposed of. Any oil recovered in the boom is unavailable for recollection. In this pilot MFNS not only showcased a highly reusable boom that allowed for oil recovery, but also looked to demonstrate that filtration of remnant hard to clean oils from surface waters would also be a viable solution to inefficiencies of their current collection and storage systems.
Working with industry experts in charge of cleaning oil spills in norther Europe, MFNS demonstrated the high reusability of the OHM Sponge (20X+!) in a boom form for treating oil spills in open water environments. MFNS is excited to offer an economic and reusable solution to oil spills that not only decreases waste and needed inventory of sorbents but also allows for the reclamation of lost oil!
